Introduction The Ben Hill County Family Connection (BHCFC) collaborative community assessment was conducted to provide local quantitative and qualitative data for the collaborative strategic plan. BHCFC brings together community partners to develop, implement and evaluate strategies to improve the well-being of children and families in Ben Hill County. The assessment included identification of needs and resources through 680 responses to a community survey conducted in Fall 2017; three focus groups; and key stakeholder interviews on economic development.
Key Findings Results from the survey, analysis of administrative data sources including Georgia KIDS COUNT, focus group conversations, and key stakeholder highlighted concerns and issues that focused on economic development and youth opportunities. In particular,
- Respondents clearly expressed a need for a community focus on improving employment opportunities, increasing wages, and providing job training, particularly in manufacturing.
- The cost of local utilities was mentioned as a barrier and concern.
- Resources for youth, including afterschool, summer or extracurricular programs for youth ages 13-18, are needed.
- Respondents expressed concern about economic blight.
